Autism

A research blog on the diagnosis and treatment of autism – for sufferers and caregivers!

Over the course of the last twenty years there has been an explosion in the number of diagnoses of people especially children with an Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

Typically there are three main variety of ASD

  • Autism
  • Asperger syndrome
  • Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS)

However in each case the symptoms will differ enormously between patients. In fact everyone’s symptoms are unique.

The Patient Experience is running this research blog to find out a bit more about the changes in diagnosis and treatment of ASD. In particular we are interested in the experiences of friends, family members and, of course, people with ASD.

We are especially interested in the following questions:-

  • At what age did the diagnosis take place? What were the symptoms which lead to the diagnosis of ASD? Did the diagnosis change over time?
  • What was your reaction to the diagnosis?
  • What treatments were used and how effective do you think those treatments have been?
  • What kind of support was provided both from healthcare professionals and from family and friends?
  • If you had to give one piece of advice to a person who had just been diagnosed with ASD or the parents of a child with ASD what would it be?

Please remember that this is just a guide so do feel free to tell any part of your story that might be of interest. Also do place any links to pages and resources you have found of interest and value.

To take part all you will need to do is write your comments in the box below.

Thanks very much for your consideration.

Please share the blog with other people who may find it of interest.
