A few months ago we invited one of our readers to write a guest blog about the usage of marijuana or cannabis for medical purposes here.

Since then medical marijuana has been regularly discussed on our multiple sclerosis group and our rheumatoid arthritis group.

In the UK in recent months the debate has once again changed. The Sentencing Council has issued guidelines that usage of cannabis by those diagnosed with a medical condition to help that condition should not incur a prison sentence. Click here for more

When faced with an acquired brain injury, a solicitor is unlikely to be at the top of a list of people to contact; and understandably so. That said, it is always wise to know the legal options available when an injury has been caused as a result of an accident or assault.

The most important thing to consider when pursuing legal action is finding a lawyer with adequate experience in brain injury claims. It is important your solicitor understands your injury and is able to locate the best medical advice. A solicitor with experience will also be able to accurately assess the effect an injury has had on your life. Click here for more

The PIP breast implants scandal is symptomatic of a wider regulatory failure affecting all medical devices according to Professor Brian Toft, patient safety expert at Coventry University.

Poly Implant Prothèses (PIP) breast implants have been in the news around the world in the past few weeks after several cases of these bursting or leaking were brought to light by the distraught victims. These implants contain an industrial grade of silicone never intended for use in a medical device and are also more likely to burst or leak than other models. Click here for more

I don’t often blog about politics, but some things are too important for me to ignore.

The Welfare Reform Bill is currently making it’s way through the UK Parliament. There are very many things wrong with this Bill, but I’ll concentrate here on some of those affecting people with disabilities.

If you’re unable to work due to sickness or disability, you get Employment or Support Allowance. (People on the previous benefit, Incapacity Benefit, are gradually being migrated over.) There are two types of ESA – one depending on your National Insurance contributions, and one depending on your income.Click here for more

“I will start by saying I am not against charities, and I recognise the valuable vital work they do. I’ve worked with several.  However there was one item on ITVs Text Santa last night that left me fuming.

Prime Minister David Cameron pledged £250K of Government money to the appeal.  Yes it was a good thing to do, and yes it’s what most people would want, but let’s just think for a minute.  The country is in financial straits, services are being cut and many people are feeling the effects. I know that charities, and those involved are good ones, help the vulnerable. The cuts though are falling hardest on the most vulnerable, the very people who need the help of the charities, even more so because of the cuts. Click here for more

Francois Venter makes a number of interesting comments in his article in the Cape Times, which starts by criticizing Helen Zille for her recent public outburst about criminalizing ‘unsafe’ sexual behavior, which only served to show how little she knows about HIV, health, sex and the law (and how much she knows about pseudo-morality, petty politics and mainstream media). But Venter goes a lot further, taking on the mantra that has launched a thousand careers: HIV is spread through promiscuity.

Venter recognizes something that UNAIDS and the HIV industry have yet to understand, that Africans are people. Shocking as that may sound, even HIV positive Africans are people. They are not sex machines, engaging in levels of coital activity that would leave little time or energy for anything else. They have jobs and families and lives that don’t allow for 24/7 sex.
