For those young women who have years of worrying about birth control ahead of them, it may be time to take a serious look at the IUD. The IUD is one of the most effective and economical forms of contraception on the market, with pregnancy rates less than .01% per year and costs that can save the average oral contraceptive-user thousands of dollars. Furthermore, recent research demonstrates that IUD users have a 50% reducedchance of developing cervical cancer risk.

Popular as a means of birth control in the 1970s, IUDs fell out of favor after one particular IUD was linked to several deaths. At that time, the DalkonShield became infamous for its serious design flaw. It’s porous, multifilament string allowed bacteria to enter the uterus of users. This led to infection, miscarriage, and even death. Significant redesign to the IUD has resulted in a safer product, though stigma against the Dalkon Shield has resulted in an overwhelming and ungrounded bias against the device.
